I've lived on the Turquoise Coast. I've watched tourists make the same transfer mistakes over and over.

Here's what I wish someone told me before my first trip.

Tip 1: Airport Taxis Are a Trap

Those taxis lined up outside Dalaman arrivals? They charge around €350 to Fethiye.

A private transfer — same journey, better service — costs €230-290.

The taxi drivers know tourists don't know this. Don't be the tourist who learns the expensive way.

Tip 2: "Door-to-Door" Means Different Things

When a shuttle says "door-to-door," it might mean:

  • Literally your hotel entrance (private transfer)
  • Your hotel after 3 other hotel stops (shared shuttle)
  • Fethiye bus station, then you're on your own (bus)

Know which one you're booking.

Tip 3: Ölüdeniz Isn't Fethiye

Most tourists actually stay in Ölüdeniz, Hisarönü, or Çalış Beach — not Fethiye town.

Buses only go to Fethiye centre. If your hotel is elsewhere, you need:

  • A private transfer (door-to-door), or
  • Bus + taxi/dolmuş (hassle)

Factor this into your cost calculations.

Tip 4: Late Flights Need Private Transfers

I've seen tourists arrive at 11pm expecting buses. There might be one. There might not.

If your flight lands after 10pm, book a private transfer. The alternative is an overpriced taxi or a very stressful wait.

Tip 5: Turkish Lira Matters

Buses are cash-only and prefer Turkish Lira. Airport ATMs work fine — grab some before heading outside.

Get smaller notes (50 TL, 100 TL). Drivers "never have change" for 500 TL notes.

Tip 6: Return Transfers Get Forgotten

Everyone plans the airport-to-hotel journey. Half forget they need to get back.

Book return at the same time — usually 10-15% cheaper. Note HAVAS bus times if you're using public transport.

Timing: Leave for airport 3 hours before international flights, 2.5 hours before domestic.

Tip 7: Kids Change Everything

Travelling with children? Skip the buses entirely.

Private transfers include free child seats (request when booking). The vehicle comes to you. No wrestling luggage through bus stations while managing overtired kids.

Worth every extra euro.

Tip 8: Groups Should Calculate Per-Person

A €350 private minibus sounds expensive until you divide it by 8 people: €44 each.

HAVAS bus is €10 each... but doesn't go to your hotel.

Shared shuttle is €20 each... but you wait around and make multiple stops.

For groups, private transfer is often the best value.

Tip 9: Summer Means Booking Ahead

July and August get busy. Transfers get booked up. Prices creep up.

Book at least a week in advance during peak season. Two weeks for popular dates.

Tip 10: Not All Transfer Companies Are Equal

Stick to reviewed platforms: Holiday Extras, GetYourGuide, Viator, Suntransfers.

Avoid random WhatsApp bookings and guys approaching you at the airport. You want a company that's accountable if something goes wrong.
